The first day of school is a milestone for both child and parent. It is exciting, emotional, and sometimes a little nerve-wracking. Whether your child is starting creche, nursery, or primary school in Port Harcourt, a little preparation can make all the difference. Here is a practical guide to help you both navigate the transition smoothly.

Before the First Day

Visit the school together before their first day to build familiarity. Talk positively about school using everyday conversations to build excitement. Establish the morning and bedtime routine a week or two in advance. Practise short separations if your child is not used to being away from you. Label everything they will bring to school.

The First Morning

Wake up early enough to avoid rushing. Have a good breakfast. Keep goodbyes short and cheerful – a long emotional goodbye makes the separation harder. Trust the teachers; most children settle within minutes.

What to Pack

A change of clothes, water bottle, lunch and snacks (if not provided), a hat or sunscreen, a small comfort item if allowed, and any required forms.

After School

Celebrate the day and tell your child how proud you are. Ask open-ended questions about their day. Watch for signs of tiredness – an earlier bedtime helps. Be patient with setbacks; some children settle immediately and then have a difficult second week, while others take longer. Both are normal.

Looking After Yourself

It is normal to feel emotional. Give yourself grace, connect with other parents, and remember this is a positive step in your child’s development. At Pleasant Places School in Port Harcourt, our teachers are experienced in helping families through this transition, and we welcome you to stay in touch throughout the day.
