Supporting Every Child: Our Special Educational Needs Unit in Port Harcourt

We know that finding the right school for a child with additional needs is one of the most significant decisions you will ever make. Our SEN Unit was built with that weight in mind: every word spoken, every plan written, and every session delivered is carried out with the understanding of what it means to get this right.

About the SEN Unit

Your child is not just accommodated here. They belong here.

The PPS SEN Unit is a dedicated programme for children with special educational needs, embedded within the wider school community. We do not isolate children with additional needs: we include them, plan for them individually, and walk their journey with them and with you.

Our team works with children across a range of needs, including autism spectrum conditions, developmental delays, speech and language difficulties, and behavioural and emotional challenges. Every child who enters the SEN Unit receives an individual learning plan built specifically for them.

We understand that choosing a school for a child with additional needs is not just an academic decision. It is a decision about where your child will be seen, respected, and genuinely valued: every day.

Applied Behaviour Analysis: explained simply

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a structured, evidence-based approach to understanding how behaviour works and how learning happens. It breaks skills and behaviours into small, achievable steps, teaches them one at a time, and reinforces progress in a way that is consistent and measurable.

ABA is most commonly used with children on the autism spectrum, but its principles benefit children with a wide range of developmental and learning challenges. At PPS, ABA is not delivered in isolation: it is integrated into each child's wider learning experience.

Our ABA therapists work closely with classroom teachers, parents, and other support staff to ensure that what is learned in therapy generalises into the child's daily school and home life.

"ABA therapy at PPS is not something that happens in a separate room. It is woven into how we teach, how we interact, and how we plan for each child. It is not about fixing a child: it is about giving them a clear path to learning and belonging."

What ABA looks like at PPS

Individual goal setting

Each child's programme begins with a detailed assessment. Goals are specific, measurable, and agreed with parents before work begins.

Regular progress tracking

Progress is recorded consistently. You will always know where your child is, what has improved, and what we are working on next.

Parent involvement

We work with parents as partners. Strategies used at school are shared with families so that learning continues at home.

School-wide integration

SEN pupils are included in the wider school community: in assemblies, shared activities, and play: wherever it benefits the child.

Support Available

Therapies and strategies offered in our SEN Unit

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

Structured, evidence-based therapy used to develop communication, social, and adaptive skills in a consistent, measurable way.

Speech & Language Support

Strategies to develop verbal and non-verbal communication: helping children express themselves and understand others more effectively.

Occupational Therapy Strategies

Fine motor development, sensory processing support, and daily living skill building integrated into the school routine.

Sensory Support

Sensory-friendly spaces and routines for children who experience sensory sensitivities. Calm, predictable environments reduce anxiety and support learning.

Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)

Every SEN pupil has a personal learning plan: written specifically for them, reviewed regularly, and shared fully with parents each term.

Inclusive Classroom Integration

Where it benefits the child, SEN pupils participate in mainstream classroom activities: supported by our SEN team to ensure they thrive, not just attend.

A Note to You

For the parent reading this page at 1am

If you have spent time reading this page, it is probably because you are carrying something significant right now. Choosing a school for a child with additional needs involves a kind of hope and a kind of fear that most parents do not talk about openly.

We wrote this page for you: not for the version of you presenting confidently at a school tour, but for the version of you wondering whether your child will be safe, seen, and genuinely cared for in a school environment.

The best thing we can offer is an invitation: come and see us. Bring your child. Ask every question you have, including the ones that feel difficult to ask. We will not hurry you, and we will not give you a script. We will show you exactly what we do and why we believe it works.

★★★★★

"When we first visited PPS, I expected to be shown a programme. What we were shown instead was a team of people who clearly knew children like our son: not as a category, but as individuals. He has been in the SEN Unit for two years. In that time, he has learned to read, to form friendships, and to navigate his school day with a confidence we did not think was possible. We are genuinely grateful."
